Replacing its earlier December 15, 2009 update, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have issued a fresh update extending the filing deadline for U nonimmigrant Interim Relief Program till February 01, 2009, while simultaneously encouraging individuals to file Form I-918, Petition for U Nonimmigrant status.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced its intent to end U nonimmigrant interim relief program that was created to allow certain crime victims to receive temporary benefits until the regulations governing U visas are published. The regulations now allow for adjudication of the U nonimmigrant petition. The relief program will end for individuals who were previously granted interim relief but who have not filed a petition for U Status (Form I-918) or do not have a Petition for Qualifying Family Member of U-1 Recipient (Form I-918, Supplement A) filed on their behalf by December 31, 2009. Those beneficiaries who have filed Form I-918, or had Form I-918A filed on their behalf, on or before December 31, 2009 will remain eligible for these benefits as long as their forms is pending.

Readers may note that U visa offers protection to victims of crimes who volunteer to assist the state investigation and prosecution of cases like domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking and other crimes.
