DHS’s Annual Flow Report on LPRs

DHS LogoRecently, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Office of Immigration Statistics released annual flow report on the number and characteristics of persons who became Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) in the US during 2008. The data presented in the report were obtained from the Computer Linked Application Information System (CLAIMS) of USCIS, which maintains information from the applications for lawful permanent resident status.

If one goes by the numbers presented in the report, the economic crisis in U.S. is not catapulting foreigners away, instead U.S. is still more favored and cherished destination. The report shows an upward increase of five percent from 1,052,415 in 2007 to 1,107,126 in 2008. While the leading region of birth of persons becoming LPRs in 2008 were 36 percent from North America followed by 35 percent from Asia. However, from 2007 to 2008, the number of adjustment of status applications filed with USCIS decreased as did the number of applications pending a decision.  Mexico leads the way with 17 percent of all persons becoming LPRs trailing by a very long distance is China with 7.3 percent and India with 5.7 percent. The report highlights that California is still a favorite haven for persons gaining LPR status in 2008 with more than one fifth or 22 percent opting to settle there.

The report provides detailed information to the readers from 1900 through 2008, it contains graphs and flow charts to make it easy for the readers to understand the evolution of immigration in U.S. and also discusses various aspects of LPR status.
