$60 Million Operation Stonegarden Grants for Border States: Napolitano
June 5, 2009 – 11:32 am
Earmarking a substantial monitory package for 13 Border States and the Territory of Puerto Rico, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano has announced fiscal year 2009 Operation Stonegarden grants of $60 million. These grants will enhance the capabilities of federal state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to jointly secure U.S. borders and territories. While making an announcement as a part of her two-day visit to the Southwest border, Napolitano said, “I am proud to announce that the 2009 funding provides additional flexibility to ensure that our first responders are equipped with the resources they need to confront the complex and dynamic challenges that exist along our borders.” The 2009 allocations reflect President Obama’s increased emphasis on the Southwest border considering cartel-violence along the U.S.-Mexico border. For fiscal year 2009, eligibility for Operation Stonegarden award was expanded to include 39 applicants covering states with international land and coastal borders. This year overall 24 applicants were added in comparison to fiscal year 2008.
