ACLU to Campaign for Citizen’s Rights

ACLU ImageIn a bid to inform US citizens regarding their rights with Border Patrol Agents (BPA), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) launched a campaign by installing signs entitled, “YOUR RIGHTS” on buses. The campaign is expected to begin early next week, with an aim of curbing the expansion of Border Patrol forces and its agent’s powers.

The signs outlined three points: if you’re citizen, you don’t have to prove it; if you’re not a US citizen and 18 or older, you must show you immigration papers to federal agents; and everyone has the right to remain silent. The ACLU says, it is just informing frightened residents, US citizens and immigrants including both legal and illegal about their rights.

The campaign is launched in the backdrop of Border Patrol random roadside stops at checkpoint located at and within the international border. According to, Jennifer Shaw, Deputy Director of the ACLU Washington, “they [BPA] set up random checkpoints, no suspicion of criminal activity or no suspicion they’d even near the border, continued to follow and stop random people and demand citizenship information from them.”

“Heightened border security is not only appropriate, it is necessary,” Rep. Dan Luangren (R-CA), ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee, told FOXNews.com. He adds that the danger is real and actions of the agents fall within Border Patrol guidelines.
