Ambassador Janice L. Jacobs, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs inaugurated the Detroit Passport Agency on, May 11, 2009. With the final phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) to be implemented on June 1, 2009, the Detroit Passport Agency will greatly enhance the Department of State’s (DOS’) ability to meet the travel needs of its customers in several states along the northern border. The agency is the twentieth passport issuance facility in the U.S. and is one of 15 passport agencies open to the public. It will accept appointments from U.S. citizens who are planning travel within 14 days. Moreover, it has the capability to issue U.S. passport book on-site to qualifying applicants and issue the new U.S. passport cards in late Spring 2009.
The Detroit Passport Agency’s location provides a gateway access to Canada via the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel and its proximity to a major domestic and international airport provides U.S. citizens with a continent location at which to apply for a passport book or a passport card.
