CRS Releases Report on Cuban Migration to the U.S.: Policies and Trends

Congressional Research ServiceBased on the notion that the change of leadership in both U.S and Cuba may provide opening for revisions in U.S. policy on Cuban migration, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) has released a report titled “Cuban Migration to the United States: Policy and Trends.” Highlighting the twists and turns occurred over the past 50 years between U.S. and Cuba with regard to Cuban migration and the federal benefits for which they are eligible. It also provides analysis of migration trends, including data regarding refugee applications, unauthorized migrants, interdictions, and applications for Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) status. The CRS reports that the immigration of Cubans to the U.S. has increased since 1995, with Cuba ranked fifth as a top immigrant-sending country-after Mexico, China, India, and the Philippines-in 2008. Nearly, 49,500 Cubans became LPRs in FY 2008.
