DHS Sets Up a Task Force to Conduct 60-Day Review of HSAS

NapolitanoTo evaluate the effectiveness of the Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS) in informing the public about terrorist threats, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano announced the formation of a task force to conduct a 60 day review of the system. The task force will be assessing the ability of the system in communicating protective measures within government and throughout the private sector. Fran Townsend, former Assistant to President George W. Bush for Homeland Security and Judge William Webster, former director of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are appointed by the DHS Secretary Napolitano to co-chair the task force and lead the review. The review will include broad consideration of HSAS and the system’s impact on state, local, tribal, territorial and international law enforcement partners, the private sector and the American people. The task force in due consultation with the Department of Justice (DOJ) will seek public input.
