GAOs Report on Key “US-VISIT” Components
November 20, 2009 – 8:14 am
In its latest report to the Congress on Department of Homeland Security’ (DHS’) U.S. Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (US-VISIT), the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has found that the US-VISIT components at varying stages of completion require an “integrated and reliable schedule.” Putting forward its recommendations, GAO asked the DHS secretary to ensure that an integrated master schedule for the department’s Comprehensive Exit project be developed and maintained in accordance with the key practices embodied in relevant guidance.
The DHS’ US-VISIT program stores and processes biometric and biographic information to control and monitor the entry and exit of foreign visitors. Currently, an entry capability is operating at almost 300 U.S. ports, but an exit capability is not. GAO has previously reported on limitations in DHS’ efforts to deliver US-VISIT exit, and made recommendations to improve these areas.
