Democrats have it wrong?
November 15, 2007 – 7:10 pmToday I was reading an article on the “democrat’s immigration dilemma,” written by Gloria Borger of U.S. News, one of her statements really set me off. She wrote:
And the sticking point isn’t about enforcement; everyone agrees that needs to be stronger. It’s about benefits for illegal immigrants. Should taxpayers provide any? And, if so, what are the parameters? It’s not an easy political call. “The push for more benefits is a killer,” says one Democratic strategist involved in discussions about immigration. “The public doesn’t want that, but it’s a problem with some Hispanic leaders.” Ipso facto, some Democrats — like the ones running for president — are unwilling to take it on.
As I have written about many times before, this is really a non-issue, an irrelevant point used by people who have no idea about how U.S. tax system operates. It is true that some undocumented workers do not pay taxes, but it is also true that some U.S. citizens do not pay either. The truth of the matter is that undocumented workers pay a lot more in taxes than the average Joe in the street realizes. The U.S. tax laws require everyone working in the United States to pay taxes, whether they are here with permission or without. Thus here is the dilemma: If an undocumented worker pays taxes, should that worker not receive any benefits? If not, then we should not require these people to pay taxes – they should get an exemption of some sorts. You know — 3 dependents, plus a write-off for being illegal. Put that on your 1040ez – make sure to include your ITIN number to receive this benefit.
It is true that it is not an easy political call — definitely not a stance for getting votes, however giving taxpayers (even those with questionable immigration status) the benefits they deserve is the right thing to do!
As far as I am concerned, the decision is easy.

Jan, can illegal immigrants donate money to a political campaign? Can they contribute a donation to their favorite candidate, without getting in trouble? I’m so unclear about this subject, I hope you can let me know. Thanks.

Well, anyone who is a foreign national and does not possess a Green Card CANNOT contribute to U.S. political candidates. You can read about it here: http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/foreign.shtml

Thank you so much for helpimg me. Now I realize why it’s so much harder to pass progressive legislation for undocumented workers, eventhough most pay taxes. I followed your link, and have to admit, I totally agree with its intentions.
