National Self-Sabotage
May 21, 2008 – 11:44 pm“The country … needs to make sure it doesn’t keep out immigrants who make the country stronger, the 66-year-old Bloomberg said. “Every year, Congress shuts the door to hundreds of thousands of doctors, scientists, engineers and artists from around the world who want to come here,” he said. “This is the greatest case of national self-sabotage and attempted suicide that I can imagine.”" AP, May 19, 2008.
Bloomber, the current mayor of New York City has it right. Any country achieves dominance by allowing foreign specialists to settle within its borders. U.S. is no exception – in fact U.S. is the perfect example of what happens when innovative people move into a country. We have been benefiting from the creativity and productivity of immigrants since our inception. Why stop our business model now? Terrorism will always exist – it has nothing to do with immigration, and everything to do with out national policies. When Oklahoma City bombing happened we did not indefinitely jail everyone who showed sympathy towards militias, so why do we stop accepting highly educated or talented or at least driven people from coming to the U.S.? Is it because of our fear of terrorism, or is it based in our xenophobia? My guess is that it is the latter.
