Politics of Fear

January 2, 2008 – 1:05 am

All of the Republican candidates are clamoring to show who can have the toughest stance on immigration.  Everyone on the right political spectrum (and some on the left) is formulating policies that will push out hard-working persons who come to the U.S. to follow their American dreams.  Why?  Do you really believe that these politicians will be able to institute the “tough” policies that they aim for?  Do you really believe that United States could get rid of millions of employed people and not face any economic consequences?  Dream on.  Our economy needs these people.  If you are concerned with issues of national security, reform our immigration laws to provide a legal way for people to come and work and eventually become U.S. citizens, while making sure that we are aware of who comes to the country.  But do not think that simply pushing people out or targeting them will help our nation to feel safer.  After all, do we really want to exchange our freedoms and openness for politics of fear?
