Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court Nomination Provides Time on Immigration

May 28, 2009 – 7:38 am

immigrationThe nomination of federal appeals court Judge Sonia Sotomayor by the President Obama is being seen as a move to delay a thornier challenge of deciding the fate of millions of illegal immigrants living in the United States. The White House is yet to commit taking up broad immigration policy changes this year as Obama is keen to tackle lingering issues like climate change, closing the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and fights over healthcare. Interestingly, former President George W. Bush twice failed to enact “comprehensive immigration reform” and the current Obama administration is also maintaining a relatively low profile on the topic. According to some advocates, Obama has bought himself a little time with the nomination. James Gimpel, a professor at the University of Maryland and expert on immigration politics said “I’m not sure I would even expect anything to pass in this Congress, much less this year.” On the contrary, lavishing praise on Obama, Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), vice chairman of the Democratic Caucus, said “The Latino Community-and not just Latinos, but anyone who’s had a set of life experience like Sotomayor will always remembers Barack Obama for this.”
