The Dream Act Fails Again in Senate

October 24, 2007 – 5:49 pm

The bill that would have given a chance at legalization to children of undocumented immigrants failed again today in the Senate by a vote of 52-44.  Eight Democrats joined 36 Republicans to block the bill, while 12 Republicans, two independents and 38 Democrats supported it.  The 44 naysayers checked their humanity and common sense at the door to vote down any discussion on a bill that would give a future to young people who came here not by their own choice, but instead were brought here by their parents.

I do not believe we should reward illegal behavior,” said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Well Mr. McConnell, I am sure that the voters will remember this statement in the next election when we are deciding how many of of you are coming back.  After all, when I think about “illegal behavior” many members of the Congress come to mind.  Perhaps we should make sure that their “illegal behavior” is not rewarded as well.  Meanwhile the Senators continue to reject a bill that would show an ounce of humanity on the part of U.S. Congress.  It’s amazing how much political weight anti-immigrant groups carry in an immigrant country.  This situation continues to amaze me on a daily basis.
