Bills Aimed at Illegal Immigrants Overwhelmed Texas Legislature

Texas Legislature Buld In an indication of how immigration has remained a hot topic for Texas Legislature, so far 35 bills have been introduced targeting illegal immigrants. Lawmakers feel that future is uncertain for most of the bills and these bills are well poised to stir passions. The bills serve as a distraction from traditional fiscal priorities similar to what they did two years ago.

Opponents voiced their displeasure by pointing out that immigration is a federal issue. Most legislators say Congress should handle it as Texas has a budget to pass, jobs to create and public schools to monitor, all in less than five months.

According to Luis Figueroa, legislative staff attorney for the Mexican American Legal and Educational Defense Fund, “these bills are largely filed by handful of legislators appealing to an extreme constituency that is small but vocal minority.”
