Indiana Senate Passes Immigration Reform Bill

February 26, 2009 – 8:53 am

On February 24, the Indiana Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill to attack illegal immigration. It consists of the toughest penalties to be imposed on the employers who are repeatedly hiring illegal immigrants. The legislation requires all Indiana employers to use E-verify, a federal electronic system to confirm that their employees are legal workers. It suspends the business licenses of the employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers. The opponents of the legislation argued that the state legislature should not intervene in immigration law, as it is a Federal matter.
