Miami Immigration Judge Quits Under Pressure
January 27, 2009 – 6:57 amA Miami immigration judge Carey R. Holiday who gained popularity after refusing to hear an immigrant family’s case has resigned, making him the third appointee of former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to leave the bench in less than two years. Although he resigned in December, Department of Justice officials confirmed this only last week.
Holiday is one of twenty judges whose appointments came under scrutiny after a department inspector general found that officials illegally considered political affiliation when screening candidates for immigration courts.
Holiday was in limelight last year, after he declined to hear an Ecuadoran family’s claim that immigration officials are unfairly targeting them because their daughter is an immigration activist.
A Justice Department official, who did not speak on behalf of the agency, revealed that Holiday was unqualified for the position and appeared to have no immigration law experience.
