Rule Limiting Immigration Arrests no Longer in Effect

The Homeland Security Department finally cleared the confusion by admitting that a rule requiring high-level approval before federal agents nationwide could arrest fugitive immigrants was lifted weeks after the presidential election.

The Bush administration imposed this unusual directive just before the election of Obama, whose aunt was living in the United States illegally. The rule expressed concerns about “negative media or congressional interest.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Kelly Nantel reversed her earlier statements on Monday by accepting that the directive was lifted at the end of November.
