DOS Announces List of Countries Violating Religious Freedom

The Department of State (DOS) has circulated the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” (CPC) for violation of religious freedom. Under the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998, and the authority delegated by the President, the Secretary of State, has identified Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan as countries that are engaged in severe violations of religious freedom. These designated CPCs will be subject to sanctions by the U.S. government. The existing ongoing arms embargo will continue for Burma and Eritrea. China will face the existing ongoing restrictions on exports of crime control and detection instruments and equipment under Public Law 101-246 and the Foreign Relations Authorization Act. For Iran, the existing ongoing restrictions on US security assistance will remain enforced. Similarly the existing ongoing sanctions imposed on North Korea pursuant to sections 402 and 409 of the Trade Act of 1974 will be intact.
