Mexican Immigrants Going to US Declines

May 21, 2009 – 5:38 am

mexicoAccording to the Census data released by the Mexican government, there has been an extraordinary slump in the number of Mexican immigrants going to the United States. The released data revealed that about226, 000 fewer people emigrated from Mexico to other countries during the year that ended in August, 2008, a decline of 25 percent. The report attributed economic slowdown and lacks of jobs for immigrants in the United States as a major reason for the dipping.  Jeffrey S. Passel, senior demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research group in Washington opine that “if jobs are available, people come, if jobs are not available, people don’t come.” The spread of swine flu in Mexico and the government’s response by shutting down schools and canceling public gatherings also hamper migration in Mexico and elsewhere. But flu-related decline is expected to be temporary, officials say. Some researchers believe that drop in crossing from Mexico proves effectiveness of tough law enforcement at the border.
