US Customs Detains Mexican Human Rights Official

October 26, 2009 – 4:06 pm

A Mexican human rights official detained as an asylum seeker even though he never requested U.S. protection has been released by immigration authorities. Gustavo de la Rosa Hickerson’s attorney Carlos Spector said the U.S. government would not pursue asylum for De la Rosa after freeing him Wednesday. Carlos Spector said, De la Rosa was detained last week while making one of his frequent trips across the border between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.  De la Rosa was held because he acknowledged fearing for his life and his family’s safety, Said Spector. He has accused the Mexican army of human rights violations in its drug war against cartels that has left more than 3,000 people dead since January 2008.
