Obama or Bush Doesn’t Matter, Immigration Prosecution Rise
July 22, 2009 – 9:05 am
Obama or Bush doesn’t matter, immigration prosecutions are increasing, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), April 2009 registered a steep rise in immigration prosecution nearly 8.5% compared to last month. TRAC obtained certain documents under the Freedom of Information Act from the Executive Office for United States Attorneys and analyzed information case-by-case to come out with these numbers. The latest available data from the Justice Department (DOJ) showed, the government reported 9037 new immigration prosecutions. On further analysis, TRAC discovered surprising information – when it compared the present stats with previous year for this type and same period, the number of filings was up 33 percent. Overall, the data showed that prosecutions of this type are up 146.7 percent from level reported in 2004. TRAC partly attributed the reason for such rise on the substantial growth in filing of these cases in U.S. Magistrate Courts. If magistrate cases are excluded and only Federal District Court cases are counted then the increase is 49.7 percent only. To make public understand, TRAC pieced together intricate stats and information, and came out with flow charts and graphs.
